Canon Point

Lune is a stoic reserved workaholic in a Belle Époque-styled post-apocalyptic fantasy world version of France, where people die every year in a mysterious magical scouring called the Gommage. She has an insatiable curiosity about the rest of the world, even as she holds other people at a strictly professional distance. She’s spent her entire life following in her parents’ footsteps, preparing to join an expedition to figure out a way to stop the Gommage.

Figuring out what she wants to do with her life if she doesn’t have a ticking clock over her head and doesn’t have to follow in the predetermined path set for her. Insomnia, nightmares, hurt/comfort, and camping while on the road.

Friends-to-lovers with Sciel; slow-burn building of trust and romance with Verso (and possibly Complicated Shit towards the end of the game & after). Exploring the bad endings.

HEADCANON;

Since some details in Clair Obscur are so sparse, I’ve been filling in a lot with headcanon. Happy to omit/change any of it when threading with canonmates if it doesn’t jive with your vision! Mostly this is to keep me sane, for lack of any other information yet (translated artbook when??). No real game spoilers below, it’s mostly worldbuilding/backstory.

• On ECONOMY IN LUMIÈRE:
  
  • Pre-Fracture Lumière used francs, but post-Fracture Lumière doesn’t use traditional currency. Based on what we know about Gommage furniture donation and some of the newspaper articles, I envision them as having turned to a barter/trade economy and become vastly more socialist in general: why pay rent when there are so many empty apartments and your landlord probably Gommaged a few years ago? Why strive to accumulate useless capitalist money, when the world is ending and everyone needs to contribute?
  
  
  • I figure there’s a big atmosphere of desperate wartime pitching-in. (Pros: Everybody helps everybody. Cons: Child labour and you start working at age six, rofl.)
  
  
  • Using chroma as currency to trade with gestrals is a newer development for the Expedition specifically.
  
  
• Tristan used his personal allotment of supplies to bring the phonograph on the Expedition, knowing Lune would appreciate it, and because it’d be good for team morale. He was her closest thing to a best friend, but we know she kept him at a distance, too.


• Stella was a good dancer, but Lune never took dance lessons (until the Danseuse ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ). Guitar was something she could teach herself, but dance required other people.


• We know Lune is a scientist, but what kind of ““science”” does she actually do?? I’m deciding she’s particularly interested in: chroma and pictos, engineering, gestral/nevron biology and culture, and anything which might make a difference with fighting the Paintress. We know she helped Gustave with the Lumina Converter but she didn’t work on the hydrofarms, so I think she’s more mechanical, and less acquainted with geology & flora.


• Surnames fell out of fashion in Lumière over time post-Fracture, as the traditional family unit became less relevant: with so many children being orphaned and fostered and taken in by other families, genealogies & family trees would be pretty chaotic.


• The language they speak in Lumière is indistinguishable from French, but they don’t have a particular name for it. It’s just the language they spoke. Don’t worry about it.


• On PICTOS:
  
  • Based on the below conversation, I believe pictos are temporary & changeable if painted onto machines/weapons/equipment (like how you can swap them out in-game), but literally tattooing chroma under your skin makes those pictos permanent, and the procedure itself is very painful. Otherwise, why would it be seen as such an insane and “brutal” thing to do?
    

    Henri: You’d have to be crazy to use Pictos on your own body.
    
    Sophie: Why? Aren’t you enjoying the show?
    
    Henri: Nah, the show’s great, but etching chroma onto your skin? Oof, that’s brutal. And just for a dance? I’ll stick to painting Pictos on my machines, I’m not cuckoo enough to put them on my body.
    
    Sophie: Could be useful though, the Expeditions rely on them quite heavily.
    
    Henri: Eh, they’re crazy too. But at least you can remove Pictos pretty easily if you change your mind.

  
  
  • The recovery’s probably also pretty gnarly, like how coloured tattoo ink can take longer to heal in real life compared to black ink. The gold tattoos also have a noticeable raised ridge, so they must have been more invasive than regular tattoos.
  
  
  • For Lune, the tattoos have resulted in some lingering arthritis-esque pain during stormy weather when the elements are being extreme. Her dedication to her work meant turning her own body into a weapon, enhancing her capabilities and becoming a mage so she wouldn’t need to rely on swords or guns.
  
  
  • There’s a tangible purpose to Lune going barefoot: since her feet are also tattooed, it makes it easier for her to channel her magic; when she’s wearing shoes, she has to work harder for the same spells.
